EAST 72ND, NYC
AN UPPER EAST SIDE PIED A TERRE GETS A REFINED UPGRADE FOR A SINGLE ART COLLECTOR’S SECOND HOME
This 500 sq ft. gem was in desperate need of an upgrade. The client also lived out of state so for awhile the hand-me-down furniture, an expected furniture arrangement and a home depot kitchen worked. Once he began to spend more time in NYC, he wanted to bring luxury and refinement into his New York crash pad. This included the ability to have friends over for cocktails, a kitchen that felt more like a bar, a separated eating and working area, and a sumptuous bedroom that felt like a hotel.
The solution to fitting all these things in a tiny space was to take a radical approach to the living room floor plan. By putting the sofa smack dab in the middle of the small living room, we created two rooms in one: a living room and a dining room. We then added layers of texture to create a high-end look at a fraction of the cost. By adding faux sued to the foyer walls, a large chandelier and through resisting adding a dining or work space in the foyer, we added graciousness to the space. The kitchen was a huge transformation, by painting out the cabinetry lacquer black, changing the hardware and placing a mirror backsplash over the tile, the space became a masculine bar. Sometimes the most exciting transformations are small spaces with small budgets.
